Manchester United successfully appealed Bruno Fernandes’ red card from their 3-0 loss to Tottenham on Sunday.

Fernandes was dismissed for a challenge on James Maddison in the first half, where he appeared to slip before inadvertently catching the Spurs midfielder with his leg. Referee Chris Kavanagh issued a straight red card, a decision upheld by VAR John Brooks.

However, after United filed an appeal on Monday, the FA confirmed the red card had been overturned. As a result, Fernandes will not face suspension and will be eligible for United’s next three Premier League matches against Aston Villa, Brentford, and West Ham.

An FA statement released on Tuesday stated: “Bruno Fernandes will be available for Manchester United’s next three games following a successful claim of wrongful dismissal.”

United manager Erik ten Hag noted that the red card “changed the game,” even though the visitors were dominating before the dismissal.

Fernandes was frustrated by the ruling, claiming Maddison himself suggested it wasn’t a sending-off. “In everyone’s view, this is not a red card. If it is, we need to reconsider many other incidents,” Fernandes remarked. “I’ve had many instances where I’ve been kicked, and I’ve never seen a red card issued so quickly. I believe it should never have been a red card.”
